The large flat part of the graph with approx 20k connections was with virtualbox 4.2.x running but no virtual machines running. But my issue is that I can't even get to install the guest additions because the base installation of Virtual Box itself fails on the DKMS build during the installation of 4.3.22. This has worked in older versions of Ubuntu (12.04 I think, with the bundled guest additions) and VirtualBox.
